I had a baby!

I can't believe it's been almost 6 weeks since Phoenix flew into our lives. On February 25, 2014, we were blessed with the arrival of our long awaited baby boy.

My C-section was originally scheduled for March 3, but just like his older brother, this babe decided to choose his own birth date. He also decided that surgery wasn't for him and was born naturally after the most intense pain I've ever felt! [I don't know how women have more children after enduring 30 hour labors when I could barely handle the 2 hours of excruciating contractions I had!]

Life has been a bit more hectic than usual, but I have to say, it seems easier overall this time around. [Could it be the fact that I'm not in the crazed stupor that comes with being a new mom?] Hopefully, I'll start getting more sleep soon too!

Maybe I'll even have time to blog more regularly!

Oh, hoppy day

I grew up "celebrating" Easter by eating excessive amounts of chocolate. Emil grew up with a more traditional [Catholic] recognition of the holiday. So far, Indio only knows that there are bunnies and an egg hunt with his cousins, which will be happening later today at his Great Aunt's place.

Yesterday, we introduced a new tradition and dyed eggs for the first time. Indio is quite confused as to why his fingers are still green this morning.

Hope you are all enjoying Easter weekend! [I can't seem to stop eating Cadbury Mini Eggs . . .]

Ringing in the New Year

I'm so excited about our upcoming trip to Mexico and was thinking about all the great photos I hope to take when I realized I never posted anything about our visit to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic over the last holiday break. What's that old saying, "better late than never"?

When deciding what to do for New Year's Eve, E and I came to the conclusion that a trip away sounded better than any over-priced dinner or party in NYC. We both had a busy and somewhat stressful year and relaxation had definitely been in short supply.

We booked a last-minute stay at the Majestic Colonial resort for 6 days and loved every minute of it. The first day on the beach, Indio exclaimed, "The sand here is softer than the Bahamas!" [I wonder how Riviera Maya will stack up.]
attempting to distract himself from the "funny feeling in his tummy"

It seems like the minute you leave NYC, everything slows down. Everyone we met in the Dominican Republic from the moment we stepped off the plane was friendly, relaxed and smiling, often a rare occurrence at home.

The resort was beautiful and well-maintained. The sand was ridiculously soft and the water was crystal clear. As far as all-inclusives go, the food was good, though a bit salty at times. Indio loved the fresh fruit and yogurt at breakfast but was disappointed that his daily dose of bacon was dripping in oil. Most importantly, the drinks were cold and the service was great!

This trip was just what we needed: some time to wind down and decompress before gearing up for 2013. I accomplished everything I had planned for this trip. I read a lot, slept more than usual [a lot isn't possible with Indio], took a ton of photos and spent time with my boys. We were so grateful to have this time away from the hustle and bustle of home.

Funnily enough, the laid back culture of the island quickly diminished when we reached the airport with all the other vacationers on their way back home. Boarding the plane was much like the NYC subway system--frantic and chaotic. Luckily, we [barely] made our flight and got home safe and sound.

4th Trip Around the Sun

Happy birthday to the funniest, snuggliest, most adorable 4 year old I know.

[zombie face painting at a classmate's bday party]
Dear Indio,

You have made my life so much sweeter. Your smile is enough to get me out of bed in the morning, even if it is at the crack of dawn. As you grow into the little man you are, you continue to amaze me with your curiosity and love of life.

I didn't think it was possible, but I love you more each day.

[Of course, I had to include a look back to day 1.]

My baby is growing up

 . . . too quickly!

I can't believe three months of school are almost up.  This year is even more momentous because Indio is finally old enough to attend the Montessori school I teach at.  He is a "3" in a class of 3-, 4- and 5-year olds with two of the calmest teachers I've met.  There is a lot of energy in this class, especially with the Kindergarten-aged boys, and both of Indio's teachers seem to handle it all with such grace.  Of course, my kid is attracted to these rambunctious, older boys, especially on the playground where games of "Aliens and Vampires" are the norm!

Luckily, Indio also loves the classroom work and routines.  I had often thought about how my own child(ren) would be in a Montessori classroom and listening to Indio speak about the Montessori materials he uses in class brings my Montessori training from 12 years ago full circle for me.  I'm so glad we made this choice.

From the mouths of babes

In an effort to stay cool during the current heat wave, yesterday evening we walked over to McDonald's for soft-serve cones.

Indio: Mama, I want the one with chocolate on top.

Me: You want the chocolate sundae?

Indio: No, Mama!  I want it now!  I don't want it on Sunday!

not taken yesterday, but seems like this has already become the summer of ice cream

From the mouths of babes

Indio: Mommy, I was in your tummy before I was born.

Me: Yes, you were.

Indio: And I was wearing pajamas.

Me: Um, no, you were naked.

Indio: And then you pooped me out of your bum.

Me: Hmmm . . . it didn't really go like that . . .

[Where does he get this stuff???]

3rd Trip Around the Sun

I know it's so cliche to say this, but I really can't believe I'm writing this post. It seems like only yesterday I was pregnant with Indio and here we are today: three years later! The last three years have been an adventure and a half. I've learned so much from my little guy and he continues to amaze me every single day.

Happy birthday to the most fabulous boy in the world! Love you like nothing else!
